Fishing in Siargao — What Can You Catch and When?

Siargao is not only famous for surfing and beautiful islands. The waters around Siargao offer a variety of fishing opportunities, from reef fishing close to the island to full-day offshore trips in the open ocean.

We choose the fishing area and technique depending on the season, weather, sea conditions and the type of fish you want to target.

🐟 Blue Marlin

The ultimate trophy fish of Siargao.

Blue marlin are mainly targeted by trolling artificial lures. This is true sport fishing — a strike can happen 15 minutes after leaving the shore, or you may spend the entire day without a bite.

Best period: roughly from spring through autumn, although marlin can be encountered during other months as well.

Marlin fishing depends not only on the time of year, but also on currents, sea conditions and the availability of baitfish.

🎯 If your main goal is marlin, it is best to have several possible fishing days and choose the day with the best ocean conditions.

🐟 Tuna

Several species of tuna can be found in the waters around Siargao.

Tuna are powerful, fast fish and provide excellent sport fishing.

Usually, targeting tuna means travelling much farther offshore into deeper ocean water. For this type of fishing, we recommend a full-day trip and a larger boat.

Seasonality: tuna can be encountered throughout the year, although their activity can change significantly depending on the area, currents and availability of baitfish.

🐟 Mahi-Mahi / Dorado

A beautiful and powerful offshore fish known for its spectacular colors.

Mahi-mahi are aggressive predators and can provide exciting action on trolling gear.

Like tuna, they are usually found farther offshore.

Seasonality: they can be encountered year-round, with periods of increased activity depending on ocean conditions and the movement of baitfish.

🐟 Wahoo

One of the fastest fish in the ocean.

Wahoo are famous for explosive strikes and extremely fast runs. They are one of the most exciting targets for offshore trolling.

They are generally found in deeper offshore areas.

Seasonality: possible throughout the year, with activity varying according to ocean conditions.

🐟 Barracuda

Barracuda can be found closer to the island and around reef areas.

They are aggressive predators that readily attack lures and other artificial baits.

They can be a good target for shorter fishing trips when there is no need to travel far offshore.

🐟 Grouper, Snapper & Reef Fish

The waters around Siargao contain many reef areas where different species of grouper, snapper and other predatory reef fish can be found.

This type of fishing is different from offshore trolling. Finding the right structure, depth and location is particularly important.

🌊 Understanding Seasonality

In tropical waters, there is no simple rule such as:

“This month means this fish.”

Fish move with their food, while currents, water temperature and ocean conditions constantly change. Even during a traditionally good season, one particular day can be completely different from another.

This is especially true with blue marlin. Sport fishing is never guaranteed — it is not a service where a fish is simply delivered to the boat.

We therefore pay close attention to wind, wave height, sea conditions and the forecast when choosing the best day to go fishing.

📅 General Seasonal Guide

January – March

Sea conditions can be more variable. Offshore fishing is possible, but the weather and waves are important factors.

April – June

Generally a good period for active sea fishing, with more stable weather and good opportunities for trolling.

July – September

An interesting period for offshore sport fishing, including targeting blue marlin. Wind and sea conditions still need to be checked carefully.

October – December

Sea conditions can become more variable. Excellent fishing is still possible during good weather windows, but the fishing day should be chosen more carefully.

International fishing competitions are held in Siargao in April. Fishermen from all over the world come to the island every year to catch their largest fish. Barracuda, Spanish mackerel, mahi-mahi, permanent inhabitants of the coast of Siargao. From March to September is the fishing season for sailfish, bluemarlin and tuna.
